Ever been at your desk wondering how you are ever going to tackle that mountain of work? Wishing that you could summon the focus and discipline of a Tibetan guru? Lucky for you there are 6 things you can do NOW to make that Mount Everest of work feel like an ant hill.
STEP 1: ELIMINATE ALL EXTERNAL DISTRACTIONS
Block yourself from Facebook, turn your phone off, Put ear plugs in, lock yourself in a room. Do whatever you have to do to cut all distractions out of your immediate attention. This could turn your 3 hour project into an 8 hour one. Every time you give in and check on these distractions you are weakening your willpower muscle. This is the most important step.
STEP 2: MOTIVATE YOURSELF
Listen to your favorite song. Something to pump you up and make you feel amazing. Try listening something you would listen to while you exercise.
List the 3 most positive outcomes of completing this task.
Some examples are
- This will improve where I stand with my boss
- This will improve my health or quality of life
- This will give me the money I need to support the ones I love and give them a good life
Focus on the outcomes and for the love of everything divine don’t skip this part. Refer back to this list when the times get tough.
STEP 3: EAT A HEALTHY SNACK AND BREW A CUP OF TEA OR COFFEE
Tibetan Monks have been drinking yak butter tea for thousands of years to achieve heightened levels of consciousness and mental clarity. This is a highly effective way to jump start your work session. More information coming soon.
STEP 4: ALWAYS START WITH THE HARDEST THING FIRST
The problem with checking your email or doing the less important task is that you burn more willpower, focus and energy than you think you are saving not doing the important task. When the times comes around that you are forced to do the harder task it will be much more difficult because you already wore out your focus and willpower muscles. Plus, nothing is more motivating than finishing the hard task first and realizing that it wasn’t as hard as you planned and the rest of your workload is downhill from there.
STEP 5: TAKE BREAKS
Focusing is a sprint not a marathon, and just like any other muscle it needs to be exercised. Starting out slow to avoid injury. Trying to focus on one thing for longer than you are capable of will only undermine the focus for the rest of your day, making it harder to keep it.
I often start with just 20 minutes of complete and total focus on 1 specific task. Then I take a 5 minute break to meditate, stretch, run or walk up the stairs, doing some sort of physical activity will pump fresh blood and nutrients into your brain and give you refreshed focus.
Meditation is a fantastic tool because nothing will make you feel more calm, collected, rejuvenated and focused afterwards. You can check out my other blog post on how to meditate here.
STEP 6: TRY FOCUSING ESSENTIAL OILS
Essential Oils are extremely effective tool when it comes to achieving outstanding mental clarity, focus and productivity. They can provide that extra boost you need to send you in a state of productive bliss when you feel like you’ve tried everything else. I highly recommend checking it out for yourself, our favorite mix is called InTune and you can find out more info soon.
Eventually in your productivity journey you will want to build your way up to 1 hour of focus. Start slow by only adding 5 minute increments every few days or risk draining your focus prematurely. Start incorporating these 6 steps into your life and you will see a world of abundance and change immediately.
The most important step is to get started. Remember this quote by the great Lao Tzu,
“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”
